AI and Self

I’m not very knowledgeable about AI in the art field, but I see writers going on strike in part because of it, and I see AI art dominating the spaces of some social media sites.

Will it take over the art and writers’ markets? I don’t know and I hope not. It does have its place. It would work well in an open-world game, if a player finishes the game and wants to experience it differently when starting over, AI can easily create new landscapes, new cities, and new maps for the player to experience. However, the core of the game should still be built by developers. AI in writing can be used as an assistant or an editor. I don’t care for AI writing a whole novel or script. It can be done, but I’d rather read a story where the writer puts themselves in the story because a real-world experience influenced them. AI can build a formulaic script; how many superhero movies are just that?

But that is not my main concern.  What happens to a person’s sense of self when AI takes everything we do and does it for us? People are genetically hunters and gathers of course in modern times it’s not the same thing, but we do bring home resources and hunt for the best way to do that by having jobs that can support us. But by taking away our jobs and the ability to create we lose the sense of self, of worth, and reason for being us. We can’t live on recreation and entertainment alone.

Our society will fall into a mass depression and the next generation will not have a goal for themselves. So, while AI can be good it can ultimately destroy our society if we take away the things that make us who we are.
